Coffee: Not Just the Caffeine?

If people ask me about work-out supplements, unlike people trying to sell you something, I’ll tell you that caffeine and creatine are the only substances scientifically shown to improve athletic performance. In moderation. Don’t blow-out your adrenals on energy drinks. So, I’m very happy to find that someone is researching this. It turns out, it may not just be the caffeine in coffee:

Still, certain effects were specific to coffee drinking, “likely influenced by factors such as the distinct aroma and taste of coffee or the psychological expectations associated with consuming this particular beverage,” the researcher write.

The investigators report that the observations could provide a scientific foundation for the common belief that coffee increases alertness and cognitive functioning. Further research is needed to differentiate the effects of caffeine from the overall experience of drinking coffee.
